Seventeen pests are reported to affect walnut during storage worldwide, of which nine are reported from India. The major economically significant of these pests include red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae). Due to restrictions in the use of chemicals for export commodities there is an urgent need for the development of other ecofriendly mitigation measures. Modified atmosphere (MA) has emerged as a potential alternative to chemicals used for disinfestation of postharvest dried fruits and nuts without affecting quality.
